Setting high expectations to positively influence incentive travel

The mind is very powerful and the influence of suggestion over it is just as strong. Often times, our minds have the tendency to affect the outcome of events before they even happen.

A recent article on Lifehacker entitled What We Expect Is What We Get explores new findings about the “Placebo Effect” and how people’s preconceptions about things and events influence how they turn out. While there are obviously other factors that go into the overall experience, a person’s attitude and perception have a lot to do with how they FEEL it went. As an incentive planner, you can use this to your advantage when coordinating incentive rewards.

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a cruise?

Lavish? Extravagant? Adventurous? Once-in-a-lifetime? For many, a cruise is the ultimate experience in decadence. Deluxe accommodations, fine dining, non-stop entertainment, and exotic ports of call are all under one roof. Would it surprise you to know that the overall cost of a cruise is considerably less expensive than a comparable hotel stay with less of the amenities included? On average, the savings can range in upwards of 40% vs. a hotel trip for the same length of time. In addition, since most amenities are included in the price of the cruise fare, there’s little need for supplements or allowances. This not only makes the trip more pleasant for the employee but removes a significant burden from your Accounting Department.

More importantly, (and here’s where you use expectations to your advantage) your attendees will have assumed you’ve spared no expense to reward them for their hard efforts. For a good majority who have never been on a cruise, it’s a dream vacation that seems out of reach. The reality is that it is very much within yours and making it happen will not only make them feel special but also instill a sense of pride and loyalty to your organization that will be reaped for years to come.

When it comes to fulfilling high expectations, it’s hard to go wrong with a cruise. With an ample variety of destinations, ships with every amenity you can think of (and some you never imagined), and a wide selection of itinerary lengths, a cruise is your ideal solution for incentive travel rewards.

Raise Funds, Raise Awareness, Raise the Roof!

While the economy is still on the mend, fund-raising effectively has become a challenging mission to accomplish.  With pocketbooks already stretched to their limits, how do you get attention and money to your cause?  Simple, host your event on a cruise ship.  Nothing generates more excitement than an exciting cruise and once you have a captive audience, you have the golden opportunity to spread your message.  Cruising is an ever growing way for organizations to draw in participants and much needed donations.  In recent months, several organizations including Native American Heritage Association (NAHA), have launched themed cruises aimed at combining a fundraising with a unique getaway opportunity.

The appeal of hosting an event on a ship is easy to see.  Cruise ships have a large variety of venues to host event functions, provide complimentary use of equipment and are generally very accommodating to specific request.  Also, if you are able to book a full-ship charter, flexibility and itinerary become easier to manage.

Another great advantage to a cruise is the ability to bring together your cause with an exciting port of call.  Let’s say your organization supports an environmental cause, wouldn’t it be even more impactful to include an expedition across a rain forest as part of the event?  With cruise ships making exciting stops in locations such as Costa Rica, the Galapagos and Alaska, Mother Nature can bring an element to your fund-raiser that no ballroom can duplicate.

Sounds like a great idea, right?  The blog Planning Your Fundraiser at Sea: 12 Tips and 5 Ships is a great resource to get started on planning your event at sea.  Not only does it include tips for planning but also has a great slideshow of the five best ships to host a fundraising event.  With an exciting cruise ship as your event venue, not only are you sure to generate plenty of buzz in anticipation but also offer an experience that will serve as a benchmark for years to come!

Welcome Back Incentive Traveling!

The last few years have not necessarily been “employee-friendly” for many across the country.  As the economy began to suffer, Corporate America buttoned down the hatch on many employee-based programs.  Furloughs, reduction of benefits and suspension of company incentives all were part of a nationwide survival tactic that was as much economic safeguarding as it was a public relations battle.  The importance of enacting cost-saving measures was only dwarfed by the need to enforce perception that companies were being as lean as possible.  As the economy continues to show signs of improvement, it appears companies are shifting their focus back to employee enrichment programs.

Incentive travel is one such program making a comeback.  After years of asking employees to make personal sacrifices for the survival of the company, the time has come to reward them for their efforts and continued perseverance through these challenging times.  What better way to do this than with an incentive travel reward?  As the president of a fund-raising and research company for the incentive travel industry, Steve O’Malley of Site International Foundation was recently quoted in the New York Times, “The industry’s taken two years off and now employee engagement is at stake. Many companies, if not most, are saying it’s safe to get back in the water.”

While companies are slowly dipping their toes in the water, a keen eye continues to be focused on controlling expenses.  An emerging trend for companies to get “wet” and still manage their costs effectively is to provide cruises for their employees.  The value of cruising has long been established.  Accommodations, entertainment, travel to exotic ports of call and ship-board activities are all hallmarks of vacations at sea.  However, there are significant advantages to a company in providing cruises as incentive travel awards.

The cost of a cruise is generally up to 40% less than staying at a comparable hotel with many more amenities.  Your employees can enjoy a care-free break from the office, not having to worry about entertainment and dining decisions.  Different ports of call offer an exciting getaway rather than a stationary visit to one resort.  Best of all, since most expenses are included in the fare (beverage and amenities such as spa packages are also available), incentive travel expenses can be easily tracked and eliminates the need for employees to file expense reports or the accounting nightmare of issuing lump-sum expense checks.

The time has come to reward employees’ loyalty and dedication.  Come on in, the water’s great!

Cruising Through the Changing Economic Waters

Cruising Through the Changing Economic Waters

In spite of the optimistic up-trend in the economy, Corporate America continues to struggle with increasing efficiencies and maintaining fiscal responsibility.  As companies begin to stabilize and restore employee benefits, many are facing the dilemma of how to offer performance incentives while upholding the perception of conservative spending.

This quandary has lead to creative approaches in the search for balance.  For many companies, the solution has been found in consolidation.  By hosting their annual corporate meetings at unique travel locations, they are able to combine business with pleasure and thereby reduce overall spending.

One such way to accomplish this is by holding meetings on cruise ships.  Not only do you get state-of-the art meeting facilities with complimentary use of AV and multimedia equipment, but accommodations, entertainment and all meals at a variety of dining venues are included for one economical price.  In addition, once your meetings have concluded, your attendees get a memorable vacation with a host of inclusive leisure and recreational activities, not to mention exotic ports of call.

The value of cruising has always been well known, but bringing it to the corporate arena is revolutionizing the way businesses are achieving corporate and employee recognition objectives while maintaining their focus on the bottom line.

Explore the value at sea for your next annual corporate meeting.

Easy, Convenient Cruise Meeting Planning

Cruise meeting planning is truly a meeting planner’s dream and offers a much easier, more convenient planning experience than land-based venues. When planning an event at a hotel or resort, most of the components of your meeting or event must be planned for – and paid for – separately. This includes catering, equipment rental, transportation for attendees, hotel accommodations, décor, entertainment and all other logistics.

Meeting planners know just how much time and organization it takes to successfully plan a hotel-based event, and are far too familiar with the stress involved in making sure that everything arrives and is set up before the event is scheduled to begin. Multiple trips to the hotel are often necessary in order to design the layout of the event, determine rental needs and meet multiple vendors, both during the planning process and for deliveries prior to the event.

The time, effort and stress that you must put into planning a meeting can be greatly reduced simply by choosing meetings at sea. Whether you opt for a full ship charter or a small cruise meeting, group cruise planning is much simpler than planning events on land. Everything you need for your cruise event is included in a single, upfront price and can be arranged conveniently with the help of your cruise line representative.

The ease of group cruise planning for meetings at sea, coupled with the significant cost-savings a cruise meeting can provide, makes a cruise ship an ideal venue for your next event.

Three Occasions Ideal for Full Ship Charters

A full ship charter provides far more flexibility than planning a cruise event or meetings at sea on a ship that also has other guests onboard. When you have the ship all to yourself, you have increased signage opportunities and greatly enhanced customization at your disposal. The cruise itinerary can be designed specific to your needs, and the entire crew is focused solely on ensuring that your cruise meeting or corporate event goes off without a hitch. Full ship charters make cruise meeting planning even easier and more convenient and, while more expensive than sharing the ship with others, this option can still provide significant cost savings over land-based venues.

There is a variety of occasions that are well-suited for a cruise ship charter, such as large corporate meetings at sea, conventions, and even some land-based events. While it may seem odd that a cruise ship can be part of a land-based event, it is actually a convenient option under some circumstances.

Here are three examples of ways you can use a full ship charter for your next large event:

  • Dockside Charters – A cruise ship is a fun, unique option for accommodations for your land-based event. If you are planning a convention, trade show or conference in a port city, consider using a cruise ship as a floating hotel for your participants. As an additional benefit, you could also host welcome receptions, awards dinners or part of your event on the ship.
  • Meetings at Sea – Cruise ship charters are ideal for large meetings or events for large groups. It provides you with a self-contained environment that can be fully customized to meet your needs.
  • Fundraisers – If you are planning a large-scale fundraiser, you might want to consider a cruise ship charter. Not only can you customize the space and provide a truly memorable experience, you can be sure that ticket sales will soar when potential attendees hear about an all-inclusive cruise to benefit a charity.

Consider an Incentive Cruise for Your Incentive Travel Program

When considering travel incentives for your employees, price is always a factor. Now, during this time of economic recovery, considering price and staying within budget is more important than ever. This is just one of the many reasons more and more companies are choosing an incentive cruise as an incentive travel award.

As any group cruise planner or incentive travel planner knows, inclusive incentives – like group cruises – provide an excellent value for the money, making them an ideal choice for companies large and small. Companies enjoy the benefits of a single, upfront price that covers transportation, accommodation, meals, entertainment, most onboard activities and more. At the same time, the travel winners are able to enjoy a luxury cruise vacation with very little out-of-pocket expense. While they may choose to spend money on shore excursions, souvenirs or shopping trips while in port, they also have the option of enjoying all that is included in the all-inclusive group cruise, regardless of their personal travel budget.

These benefits make an incentive cruise the ideal choice for a variety of circumstances. For example, if you are planning an incentive travel program for both executives and sales people on your staff, an all-inclusive cruise will provide luxury that appeals to both groups, ensuring that your incentive program will be a success.

All Inclusive Travel – Ideal for Low Wage Earners

When planning travel incentives to improve employee morale and increase staff productivity, all inclusive destinations and group cruises are always a good option. This is particularly true when planning incentive programs for low wage earners. While incentive travel is always appealing to workers at all levels, offering lower-paid staff trips to expensive destinations they might not be able to afford could actually work against you, and even cause your winning staff members embarrassment. Simply put, it will do no good to provide transportation and a hotel in a popular destination if your employee will not be able to afford to participate in local activities, dine out and enjoy their stay.

This makes all inclusive incentives particularly well-suited for staff members that earn lower wages. Travel incentives that are all inclusive take the pressure off of low-earning employees and ensure that they can thoroughly enjoy their travel award. For example, an all inclusive group cruise includes meals, most on-board activities, some drinks and, of course, the cruise itself. And, when group cruise planning, it is often possible to have fun extras included in the price. This ensures that your staff members will fully enjoy their travel award and will not have to stress over their budget during their vacation.

Remember, when it comes to increasing productivity and job satisfaction, travel incentives are generally much more cost-effective than raises and the effects are long lasting.

Is All-Inclusive Travel A Good Fit For You?

Inclusive travel is a type of travel where just about everything you could think of is thrown in as part of the deal. A typical inclusive travel package includes airfare, bus and/or train fees, ferry or boat tickets, room, meals, and often some kind of entertainment packages. Due to the fact that all of these aspects are covered under one bill and pre-negotiated by travel experts, it is generally more affordable to choose inclusive travel. Here are the top reasons to choose inclusive travel options:

  • Affordability – With travel experts negotiating the best prices possible and using volume incentives that individuals can rarely offer, it is almost impossible to match the pricing of an all-inclusive travel package.
  • Safety – There is limited to no need to take a lot of money or travelers checks on an excursion that is all inclusive.
  • Flexibility – While many might associated all inclusive travel with a lack of options, there are almost always add-ons and other options that can be had for the right price.
  • Meeting new people – Many times companies that book tours and other cultural events as part of an all-inclusive package will get tickets in the same general area. As a result, attending a night of theater or a fine restaurant might put you within earshot of another group of patrons from the same company.

Cruises Are Inclusive

Cruise travel tends to be all inclusive, and business-related travel aboard cruise ships tends to be no exception to this rule. This is true even when the cruise includes meetings and other special events tailored to meet the needs of businesses. Here are four reasons why all inclusive cruise pricing is a good thing for businesses:

  • Planning expenses – Simply put, it is far easier to plan for known expenses than to hand out corporate credit cards and hope and pray that recipients use those tools responsibly. A stitch in time saves nine.
  • Quicker planning – Instead of having to shop around for dozens of different services, cruise prices put all those services under one roof. Having everything on one bill that is pre-determined is at heart and soul of what makes cruise meetings very affordable for business uses. Time is money after all.
  • High quality service – Cruise ships offer greater customer service than a comparably priced hotel. Think of it as getting a free star to a star and a half in terms of service at any given price point. A penny saved is a penny earned.
  •  Inspirational views – Along with the amazing service, the absolutely stunning views afforded by most cruise ships is unmatched by anything, anywhere, at any price. Tropical getaways to amazing glaciers, cruises have the best views, and those views can be inspirational. No additional fees are required to have motivational views that can change your outlook on life and the world at large. It is impossible to put a price on inspiration in any other way.
