“But I Only Need a Break!”
Sometimes ideas come to writers when they least expect it. This one floated over on a wave of delicious food smells at a restaurant near a convention center in Colorado. An obviously exhausted woman told her lunch companion, “I don’t want a ride on the cog rail with Rebecca and I don’t want to go to the symphony with Jim. I just want a break in the action.”
Maybe they were attending a convention and maybe not, but one thing was clear: sometimes people need to relax, big time. That is especially true of people who are on their feet and butts for days at time at conferences and meetings. They do here, they go there, they listen, they talk, all at others’ bidding and on others’ schedules.
Here is where inclusive travel planners come in. Instead of planning everything from A to Z in every spare second, why not plan an hour or two on one day where people can either do what they want? Or if you client insists on planning something, maybe you could work out a special deal at the hotel spas for discount treatments.
If you’re thinking of maybe planning a choice of activities, remember this–people are still subject to peer pressure even when they become adults. The woman above may have wanted only to take a nap or sit in her hotel bed and read, but Rebecca and Jim had other plans for her. Not only does it create problems for the woman, but if she ends up succumbing to the pressure one of those people might be offended.
The lesson is this: add pressure and/or work to someone’s leisure time and your efforts will not be looked upon kindly. Take away that person’s cares for a little while and you will fare much better.
