Are We There Yet?
United States citizens can currently travel to all the Caribbean islands but one–Cuba. While many of us have been eager to visit this beautiful country, the government has felt that it was not in our best interest to be permitted. Now there is talk of that changing, but are we there yet?
Some of us are–President Obama recently relaxed the constraints on American citizens who want to visit family in Cuba. While this seems like the humane thing to do, it has opened another door just enough to let in a sliver of light after forty seven years–soon citizens may be able to visit the island as tourists.
Leadership changes in Cuba may have a lot to do with it. Raul Castro, the new president, has taken over for his brother Fidel, who has been ill. Cuba is now more open to the idea of having Americans visit, and there are plenty of Americans who would like to do so. There are even a few all-inclusive resorts, a good thing for incentive planners to know.
There is a rub, however–some report that services is not up to par for the more demanding traveler. This would put a wrinkle in current incentive travel to Cuba–when booking incentive travel, especially at the all-inclusive resorts, services is crucial to success. Part of the problem is that hotel owners would not have control over their properties, but once they do it will improve service markedly.
Although Cuban travel is still quite rough around the edges, in time it will become refined. Cuba will someday be one of the favorite destinations for travelers, and any event and meeting planner involved in incentive travel should keep her eye on the little island.
