Planning International Travel
International inclusive travel can be some of the most challenging assignments for the planner. In today’s world, where business and communication is increasingly more global, it is both more critical and more difficult to plan inclusive travel. Consideration of a few simple things can help the inclusive travel planner make the most of an international travel assignment.
Get an Ally
The first thing that a planner should do is connect with a “twin” in the destination country. Find an inclusive travel planner in the host country and develop a good relationship as quickly as you can. Hire this person to help you get past some of the cultural and political barriers that may prevent you from scheduling a successful event.
Educate Yourself
Study as much as you can about the boundaries you may encounter. Make sure you understand local customs and laws and can pass these on to your travelers. Customs, visas, travel security, and taxes often present the lion’s share of the problems. Most countries are not as concerned with meetings and planners as they are with safety and security, and rightly so. So if you don’t do your homework, don’t be surprised when you run into difficulties. You will run into enough problems if you do study the host country’s restrictions.
In the end, you may not be able to prepare for every eventuality. For instance, some are denied visas as tourists in the United Kingdom because they have never traveled to a foreign country before. That’s a pretty silly reason, but pointing that out will not help you as planner. As long as you do everything in your power to avoid a catastrophe, you are doing your job as a planner.
