Putting the Bad Economy to Work

Nobody likes what’s happening to the economy. Everyone is trying to save money and look for cheap deals. In return, merchants are responding with specials, inclusions, and other types of discounts. The inclusive travel planner can benefit from the economy by looking for special deals, too. Here’s how you can put the bad economy to work for you.

Discounts

Hotels are hurting like everyone else. Since the bailout, they have seen fewer company meetings and conferences. Rates have come down, services has gone up, and they often work out special offers for planners.

However, you may also be able to make your own discount. If you can book so many rooms, for instance, they may give you a percentage discount. Even if it isn’t mentioned or advertised, you can always ask. If one hotel says no, try another. If the big chains all refuse you, try a boutique hotel. Very likely someone, somewhere, will help in some way.

Inclusions

This is star player for the inclusive travel planner. Even if a hotel doesn’t currently have any discounts going on, maybe you can work something else out. Find out what other provisions can be included in the price. If you’re working with a meeting group, see if you can get meeting rooms at a discount, or catering.

Even if the hotel still says “no deal,” don’t give up. There are often other types of fees with certain hotels, resorts, and inns that can be waived in certain circumstances. The one thing you are offering them in return is a guaranteed occupancy. This is rather a lot in an uncertain economy.
