Spotlight on Pécs
What city holds the proud title of the European Capital of Culture 2010? Pécs, Hungary, also known as the gateway to the Balkans. Pronounced Paych, the city is rich in Turkish culture with traces of Roman influence scattered here and there. In addition, it is the site of the first Hungarian university established in 1367.
Pécs will host a number of festivals in 2010 including the Spring Festival, Promenade Festival, Heritage Festival, and the Fringe Festival. The Spring Festival celebrates the classical music and arts of Hungary and Europe. In the summer, the Promenade Festival showcases dance and visual arts. Pécs Days, or the Heritage Festival is the city’s oldest festival. The Fringe Festival provides a platform for artists who may not be as well known to shine.
There are other celebrations during the year, some a bit whimsical. If you enjoy street performances, Pécs in July is the place to be. The Circus and Street Festival includes stunning performances by jugglers, acrobats, and all manner of outdoor circus performers. In August, Pécs is host to the International Adult Puppet Festival. The first part of the festival is dedicated to a competition between puppeteers and the second half is pure entertainment.
Think outside of the box for your next incentive travel destination and add culture as well as fun for your attendees. Explore Hungary via Pécs.
