When You Have Nervous Clients
It’s no secret–everyone’s been burned some time in his or her life. When it happens to a business owner or executive, it can be a big ticket burn–unscrupulous contractors and freelancers are often the source of that burn, and it can cost companies enough money to smash a cat. So when you contact potential clients and they say, “We do everything in house now,” that’s probably why.
However, there are ways to be prepared for companies that might be worried–and any company that has not worked with you yet should be worried. This is not because it’s you who is calling, but because it’s someone they don’t know yet who is calling on their business.
Be Ready With Answers
Anticipate questions they might ask you, such as how long you have been in business, who you have served in the past, and who your employers were before you were on your own. Have references ready, and make them count–don’t get your neighbor to say he used your services when all you did was check prices for his vacation for him. Make your references the highest and best you can.
Be Insured for Big Ticket Events
Contractors should check with their insurance companies to see how surety bonds or other instruments can help them. Surety bonds are complicated, so make sure your agent explains them thoroughly–and you understand how they can help–before you purchase. Once you are bonded, you have another feather in your cap of reliability. This can help put the client at ease.
Just Do It Right
If you are wondering how to make the best of this situation, first and foremost be a good businessperson. Do things right and you won’t have to sweep up after yourself later. A clean record is always the best selling point you will have.
